Ceramicist

Hi there. My name is Nikki Kwong, owner of Little Geck Ceramics, based in foggy San Francisco, California.

Little Geck Ceramics came about when I couldn't find a large enough vessel to drink large amounts of tea out of, nor could I find any leopard gecko wares that reminded me of my geck Torch. I then realized what had to be done. I ended up taking all divisions of the ceramics courses available at CCSF and made a gecko mug for myself. A beginning mug for sure, as it's certainly a chunky cup! But, it was my first step into finding a new passion for ceramics. After completing all level courses of ceramics, I became a lab technician for the CCSF ceramics studio.

Although quite a common pet in my circle of friends, I've encountered many who didn't know what a leopard gecko was. Many believed he was an alien like ET or a yellow booger. This was a definite call to action to spread the word of leopard geckos, and perhaps other animals who don't get as much recognition and spotlight!

Little Geck Ceramics creates original, high quality, ceramic wares based on the underrepresented animals in today’s culture and climate. As a former biologist and humane educator I find the best learning tool is that of visuals and touch. Humane education about these animals is key to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation. This helps people become aware of these animals, without necessarily “owning” or going out of the way to come in contact with them. It also helps spread the word on potentially adoptable animals people would have otherwise overlooked. I want my ceramic work to be more than a functional vessel, but a story people can pass along to others in hopes to spread the word about these beings we share the world with.
